Abraham: The Promise
Common Ground
ASK: Have you ever been made a promise? What is a BIG promise you remember? (Give time for answers) Did it happen? Did you know that God made promises too? God made a BIG promise to a man named Abraham. He also made a BIG promise to you too! Let's look and see what BIG promise God made to Abraham. Then we'll see what BIG promise God makes to YOU!
Read the Word
(Genesis 12:1-3) The Lord said to Abram, “Leave your country and your people. Leave your father’s family and go to the country that I will show you. I will build a great nation from you. I will bless you and make your name famous. People will use your name to bless other people. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse those who curse you. I will use you to bless all the people on earth.”
(Genesis 15:5-6) God led Abram outside and said, “Look at the sky. See the many stars. There are so many you cannot count them. Your family will be like that. Abram believed the Lord, and because of this faith the Lord accepted him as one who has done what is right.
(Genesis 17:1-6) When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to him. He said, “I am God All-Powerful. Obey me and live the right way. If you do this, I will prepare an agreement between us. I will promise to make your people a great nation.” Then Abram bowed down before God. God said to him, “This is my part of our agreement: I will make you the father of many nations. I will change your name from Abram to Abraham, because I am making you the father of many nations. I will give you many descendants. New nations and kings will come from you.
(James 2:23) “Abraham believed God, and because of this faith he was accepted as one who is right with God.” Abraham was called “God’s friend.”

Like Jesus
Just like God made Abraham a BIG promise. He also made YOU a big promise too. God told Abraham to obey Him and live the right way. If he dd this , God would make sure that the promise happened. God tells us that if we obey His word, he will bless our lives too!
Let's see if we can find an example? Acts 2:38-39 says, " Peter said to them, “Change your hearts and lives and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ. Then God will forgive your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is for you. It is also for your children and for the people who are far away. It is for everyone the Lord our God calls to himself.”
DO you see the promise? God said if we change our hearts and lives (repent) and be baptized in the name of Jesus THEN God will give you a GIFT! A gift of the Holy Spirit. But he didn't just promise something to YOU he also promised it to your children and just like Abraham - Everyone who lives beyond you!
