Common Ground

Ask your child if they have ever felt treated unfair. Maybe a sibling received a gift or an extra chicken nugget at McDonalds. Ask them if they have ever said, "That's Not Fair!" Let your child tell the story. Have you ever gotten mad at your brother or sister? Or maybe your best friend at school? If so, what did you say to them? How did you want to treat them?

Today we are going to read the story about Adam and Eve's two sons. Their names are Cain and Abel.  One of them didn't think that they were treated fairly and decided to do something about it...let's see what happened!

Read Word

Genesis 4 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)
Eve, Adam's wife, became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Cain. She said, “With the Lord’s help, I have made a man!” Then she gave birth again to Cain’s brother Abel. Abel became a shepherd, and Cain becade a farmer.

At harvest time, Cain brought a gift to the Lord. He brought some of the food that he grew from the ground, but Abel brought some animals from his flock. He chose some of his best sheep and brought the best parts from them.
The Lord accepted Abel and his gift. But he did not accept Cain and his offering. Cain was sad because of this, and he became very angry. The Lord asked Cain, “Why are you angry? Why does your face look sad? You know that if you do what is right, I will accept you. But if you don’t, sin is ready to attack you. That sin will want to control you, but you must control it."
Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”  So they went to the field. Then Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.  Later, the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” Cain answered, “I don’t know. Is it my job to watch over my brother?”
Then the Lord said, “What have you done? You killed your brother and now his blood is shouting to me from the ground. So you will be cursed from this ground. Now when you work the soil, the ground will not help your plants grow. You will not have a home in this land. You will wander from place to place.”
Then Cain said to the Lord, “This punishment is more than I can bear! You are forcing me to leave the land, and I will not be able to be near you or have a home! Now I must wander from place to place, and anyone I meet could kill me."  Then the Lord said to Cain, “No, if anyone kills you, I will punish that person much, much more.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain to show that no one should kill him. Cain went away from the Lord and lived in the land of Nod.

Eve gave birth to another son. She named him Seth. Eve said, “God has given me another son. Cain killed Abel, but now I have Seth.” Seth also had a son. He named him Enosh. At that time people began to pray to the Lord.

Like Jesus

So after hearing the story of Cain and Abel. Cain was jealous of Abel. The reason why is because God was happy with Abel but not with Cain. Because Abel bright God what He (God) wanted...and Cain brought God what he (Cain) wanted. And Cain was jealous. Have you ever been jealous? God told Cain that he could make it right.  He said that sin (breaking God's law) was at the door of his heart and he shouldn't let it in. But then Cain did.  It's always better to do what God said. But Cain couldn't be mad at God so he got mad at his brother. Was it his brother's fault that Cain didn't do what God wanted? NO!
How do you think Cain should have treated his brother? Why do you think Cain lied to God after he killed Abel? How should you treat people who we do not think like us? Jesus told us that we are to, "love your enemies and pray for them." Do you know what the golden rule is? It's "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you."

Play a classic game with your child. Thumb War. You remember... 1.2.3.4. I declare a thumb war. This game will teach children how to react to unfairness and maintain self-control.  Have them play with their eyes closed and tell them they are not allowed to get mad.
