Exodus: Moses & The Burning Bush
Common Ground

What are some ways that God talks to people? Through prayer, through reading the bible...what about a burning bush? Today we’re going to look at one of the most popular stories of God speaking to someone. We’re going to learn about Moses and the burning bush. The day that Moses encountered the burning bush was a special day for him, because that was the day God called him to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt.
God was calling Moses to rescue His people. God would do this over and over again throughout the course of the Old Testament, until one day, He sent Jesus, the once and for all Rescuer. The God of the Bible is all about rescue. We see this in the story of Moses.

Read the Word
Exodus 3:1-10 ERV

Moses’ father-in-law was named Jethro.[a] Jethro was a priest of Midian. Moses took care of Jethro’s sheep. One day Moses led the sheep to the west side of the desert. He went to a mountain called Horeb,[b] the mountain of God. 2 On that mountain, Moses saw the angel of the Lord in a burning bush.
Moses saw a bush that was burning without being destroyed. 3 So he decided to go closer to the bush and see how a bush could continue burning without being burned up.
4 The Lord saw Moses was coming to look at the bush. So he called to him from the bush. He said, “Moses, Moses!”
Moses said, “Yes, Lord.”
5 Then God said, “Don’t come any closer. Take off your sandals. You are standing on holy ground. 6 I am the God of your ancestors. I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”
Moses covered his face because he was afraid to look at God.
7 Then the Lord said, “I have seen the troubles my people have suffered in Egypt, and I have heard their cries when the Egyptians hurt them. I know about their pain. 8 Now I will go down and save my people from the Egyptians. I will take them from that land and lead them to a good land where they can be free from these troubles.[c] It is a land filled with many good things.[d] Many different people live in that land: the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. 9 I have heard the cries of the Israelites, and I have seen the way the Egyptians have made life hard for them. 10 So now I am sending you to Pharaoh. Go! Lead my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.”

Like Jesus

In many way the life of Moses points to Jesus. Pharaoh ordered all Hebrew boys thrown in the Nile River and tried to kill all the baby boys.  When Jesus was born he tried to kill the baby Jesus by killing all the Hebrew babies in Bethlehem.

God saved Moses, through Pharaohs daughter.  God saved Jesus through sending Him to escape in Egypt.
Moses grew up to be a delivered to His people.  Jesus grew up to deliver all people.

When God spoke to Moses he appeared in a burning bush and referred to himself as "I AM." God called himself "I AM." This introduction is also used to describe Jesus. For example, Jesus said "I AM the bread of life. " "I AM the living water."

Jesus was not talking about physical hunger and thirst but rather spiritual.

I AM the light of the world. Just as the sun gives light to the earth - Jesus gives light to our hearts.

Jesus is the I AM.
