Common Ground
Last week we learned that God created everything, and the reason was for His glory. And the last thing He created was people in His own image, which means that out of all of God’s creation we are most like Him. (ASK YOUR KID) Even though we are made in his image, do you think people do what God wants them to do all the time? (Give time for answers and ASK) What are some things that people have done that's made God happy? What are some things that people have done that would make God sad?
The first two people ever created was Adam and Eve. God gave them a beautiful garden to live in. It was full of animals, trees and food. God told them they could do whatever they wanted except one thing. They could not eat the fruit of one tree. That tree was called "The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil." God told them that something bad would happen if they ate fruit from that tree.
So, today we are going to see if they ate the fruit and what happened. And we are going to talk about why their decision makes people do bad thing, why sometimes people get mad and why sometimes you don't listen to mom and dad. :-) Listen closely to the Bible story to see if you can find the answers...

Read the Word
The Bible story for today begins with the first lady ever created walking in the beautiful garden and begins to talk to a snake.
Genesis 3:2-7
The snake spoke to the woman and said, “Woman, did God really tell you that you must not eat from any tree in the garden?” The woman answered the snake, “No, we can eat fruit from the trees in the garden. 3 But there is one tree we must not eat from. God told us, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden. You must not even touch that tree, or you will die.’”
But the snake said to the woman, “You will not die. God knows that if you eat the fruit from that tree you will learn about good and evil, and then you will be like God!” The woman could see that the tree was beautiful and the fruit looked so good to eat. She also liked the idea that it would make her wise. So she took some of the fruit from the tree and ate it. Her husband was there with her, so she gave him some of the fruit, and he ate it. Then it was as if their eyes opened, and they saw things differently. They saw that they were naked. So they got some fig leaves, sewed them together, and wore them for clothes.
During the cool part of the day, the Lord God was walking in the garden. The man and the woman heard him, and they hid among the trees in the garden. The Lord God called to the man and said, “Where are you?” The man said, “I heard you walking in the garden, and I was afraid. I was naked, so I hid.”
God said to the man, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat fruit from that special tree? I told you not to eat from that tree!”
The man said, “The woman you put here with me gave me fruit from that tree. So I ate it.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What have you done?” She said, “The snake tricked me, so I ate the fruit.”
So the Lord God said to the snake, “You did this very bad thing, so bad things will happen to you. It will be worse for you than for any other animal. You must crawl on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life. I will make you and the woman enemies to each other. Your children and her children will be enemies. You will bite her child’s foot, but he will crush your head.”
Then God said to the woman, “I will cause you to have much trouble when you are pregnant.
And when you give birth to children, you will have much pain. You will want your husband very much, but he will rule over you.”
Then God said to the man, “I commanded you not to eat from that tree. But you listened to your wife and ate from it.
So I will curse the ground because of you. You will have to work hard all your life for the food the ground produces. The ground will grow thorns and weeds for you. And you will have to eat the plants that grow wild in the fields. You will work hard for your food, until your face is covered with sweat. You will work hard until the day you die, and then you will become dust again. I used dust to make you, and when you die, you will become dust again.”
The Lord God used animal skins and made some clothes for the man and his wife. Then he put the clothes on them, and God forced the man to leave the garden. Then he put angels and a sword of fire at the entrance to the garden to protect it. The sword flashed around and around, guarding the way to the tree of life.

Like Jesus
Adam and Eve didn't listen to God. God told them not to eat the fruit and they did anyways. They broke God's law. Do you know what it's called when you break God's law? It's called SIN.
What is sin? Sin is breaking God’s law and it separates people from God. The opposite of SIN is HOLY. The Bible says that God is holy. Holy means “to be set apart.” God is set apart from sin and sin separates people from God because we broke his law (or rules). Adam and Eve’s sin separated them from God. Isn't that so sad?
Before sin entered the world, they were friends with God, and He gave them everything they needed and they had a relationship with God. But when they disobeyed God, they brought sin into the world and it changed everything. Not only had sin entered the world, but now death was also in the world. Adam and Eve did not die right away, but they began to get old. From that point forward, death and sickness have become a part of the world. Have you ever been sick? The whole world is hurting because of sin.
Everyone, except Jesus, that has ever lived has sinned and has done things God doesn't want them to do. The punishment for sin is death. Isn't that so terrible? But God did not turn His back on Adam and Eve. He did not leave them. Instead hundreds of years after Adam and Eve, God became a person to save all the people who would ever live from their sins! His name would be Jesus.
What does this mean? Have you ever played in the dirt? Did your hands and face got dirty? Who helped you clean up? Your mom, dad or teacher right? That's what Jesus did. The dirt was like sin and Jesus is like the person who helped you get it off. Just like your parents help you clean dirt off your hands and face, Jesus helps you clean sin off of your heart.
But first you have to ask for help! When you ask Jesus to help you clean the sin off of your heart it's called repentance. And so how do you ask Jesus to take the dirt off of your heart? Like this - "Jesus, I have some sin in my heart. And I've done some things that break your law. I'm sorry will you please clean me up?" And when people tell Jesus that they are sorry and ask Him to clean their heart - Jesus' answer is always YES!

Prayer Time
(Props: Paper and Pencil)
Think of a time you did something wrong. What happened? Write about or draw a picture of how you felt on one side of the page. The Bible says we deserve punishment for our sin, but Jesus came to rescue us so our sins could be forgiven! On the other side of the page, draw or write about how thankful and happy you are for what Jesus did for you.
Parents - lead your child into a prayer of repentance: Something like "Jesus, I have some sin in my heart. And I've done some things that break your law. I'm sorry will you please clean me up?"
